All Ireland TY Drama Competition!

On Saturday class Ariel went to Macroom in Cork for the Briery Gap All Ireland TY Drama Competition final. We got on the bus at 7;30am which was just fab. It was a four hour journey so we got there and we were all a bit tired. The other drama in our class was on first so we watched them perform and we went on after lunch. It went really well! We all really enjoyed and and it was the best it had ever been. We watched one more play and then got back on the bus home. It was a lot of time on the bus but with a mini speaker blaring music and a stop in McDonald's on the way home it was fun!

We found out on Monday that we ended up getting an adjudicators award which was great because we all worked so hard on it. I'm sad it's over!

Mini Company Competition

Today we had our in school competition for Student Enterprise. Everyone set up their stands in the hall and we were judged based on our product, appearance of stand, marketing technique and business report.

Two groups got through to the county final: BamBeauty and iProtect.

Tomorrow making pancakes for the pancake party and we're off for midterm!

February Update

It's February which means that there are only 3 months left of TY :( There is only a week and a half left of school before midterm and we've been extremely busy. Next Thursday is the competition for Student Enterprise or 'Mini Company'. We've been working hard on our business report and getting everything organised for our stand. I feel like most TYs have a love/hate relationship with Mini Company. It's great when we're able to sell our products but it's also really stressful trying to get organised. To learn about our Mini Company click here.
Instagram media by photobeaucanvas - We are a TY Mini Company from St. Wolstan's. We make canvases using your photos, collages and designs. 🌇 We will be selling A4 canvases, square canvases for Instagram photos and also small letter canvases to spell out names.😄 We will be taking orders for canvas photographs soon. 📷 We can't wait to start production! #photography #photo #canvas #collage #instagram #phototransfer #art #minicompany
We've also been working on our SciFest projects for the competition on 6th March. Our SciFest project is about music. We're testing whether musical background affects the ability to recognise and match pitch. We tested TYs and 1st years.

On Wednesday we will have our last day of our second work experience placement. I've been doing mine in Walton's Music shop. I haven't been doing a whole lot, but its been fun meeting other TYs on work experience and getting a chance to try out all the different instruments. I still don't have a work experience placement for after midterm but I'm trying to get one at the moment!

I'm really looking forward to midterm next week. I'm mostly looking forward to it because on Friday we're going to see Saint Raymond in The Academy. I'm so excited :))

Here's one of his songs for ya:

English Play

On Tuesday, TY's will be going to Mullingar Arts Centre to compete in the Briery Gap Transition Year Drama Competition. For this competition we wrote plays in groups in English class, and have been working on them and performing them all year. In Mullingar, we will perform our play for judges to try and get through to the finals.

Our class has two plays that have been entered into the competition. Our play (it still doesn't have a name) is about homophobia and how attitudes toward homosexual people have changed throughout history. It has a wide range of different characters like hippies, soldiers and show girls. I've been involved in directing and also have a small role.

Everyone has really enjoyed working on the play and, although we need to rehearse a lot more, we are all excited to perform on Tuesday!

Christmas is coming

TY's weren't in school many days this week. On Monday morning we had a workshop about a video competition we are entering in IT. For the competition we have to create a 3 minute video in teams about income inequality and how 'Decent Work' can address it. In the workshop we were told about income inequality and what we should include and show in our video.
Youth Connect video competition
On Tuesday there was a strike for teachers so we had the day off. I went into town so it was a good day :) Wednesday was our last day of work experience after 10 weeks in the same place. It was a great experience working in Avoca and interacting with customers. I was sad to be going but am excited for my next work experience. I was given some carrot cake (my favourite) to say thanks but annoyingly my dog ate it so I didn't get to enjoy it.

On Friday we went on a Maths trip to Rathbeggan Lakes in Co. Meath. It was FREEZING. I don't think I've ever been as cold to be honest. At least we could buy tea there to keep our hands warm. We did maths puzzles using different equipment we were given. Groups walked around the lake with trundle wheels or measure heights of trees etc. After we went to Blanchardstown for lunch and we got Ginzeng :))

There's only one full week left of school and on Wednesday we're collecting money in town for the ISPCC. Then there's just a week of Christmas exams and then Christmas holidays. I'm so excited!

Millennium Development Goals

In Religion this month we are learning and researching about the Millennium Development Goals. The MDGs are eight international development goals that were established in 200 and were hoped to be achieved by 2015. These are the MDGs:

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
  2. Achieve universal primary education.
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women.
  4. Reduce child mortality.
  5. Improve maternal health.
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability.
  8. Develop a global partnership for development.

We were put into eight groups and each group was given a development goal to research in detail. Our group researched MDG no. 4 'Reducing Child Mortality'. The target for this goal was to reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-5 mortality. We found out that:

  • One child in seven dies before the age of seven in Uganda.
  • A child dies every 3 seconds.
  • 6.3 million children under the age of five died in 2013.
  • Children in sub-Saharan Africa are more than 15 times more likely to die before the age of five than children in developed regions.
Globally, significant progress has been made in reducing mortality in children under 5 years of age. In 2012 , 6.6 million children under-5 died, compared with 12.6 million in 1990. Between 1990 and 2012, under-5 mortality declined by 47%.
If you would like to find out more about the Millennium Development Goals click here: Unfortunately, despite these improvements, the world is unlikely to achieve the MDG target of a two-thirds reduction in 1990 mortality levels by 2015.
